The original plan for Blender 2.80 was to work on all GPUs that have OpenGL 3.3 drivers and were released in the last 10 years. However, we have found that there are many graphic cards that support OpenGL 3.3 in hardware, but have critical bugs in the OpenGL drivers.


macOS 10.12 or newer is supported, and Mac hardware from the last 10 years appear to be working. Older macOS versions have bugs in the OpenGL drivers that cause problems for Eevee, and the only way to upgrade the drivers is to upgrade the operating system as a whole.

On Windows, earlier GPU generations have issues with Eevee due to bugs in the driver. No significant driver updates have been released in the last 3 years for these GPUs. On Linux, the situation is better as the drivers continue to be updated, but for good performance newer GPUs are recommended.


New Intel drivers only work for fairly recent Intel hardware. While can use newer OpenGL features to improve performance or maybe support additional Eevee features, requiring it would mean dropping support for more Intel graphics cards.

Een driver voor een videokaart (ook wel GPU - Graphics Processing Unit) is software waarmee het besturingssysteem en de softwareapplicatie de grafische hardware van de pc kunnen gebruiken. Om de beste prestaties uit de hardware te halen, is het raadzaam om de drivers voor de videokaart (GPU) te laten bijwerken.

If you just use your computer for web browsing, email, answering/asking questions here, a few YouTube videos, and not much else, then the lack of proprietary drivers probably won't bother you. You may notice some stutter in video, and you may not. Honestly, there's no way to tell beforehand.


Personally, I've mostly seen reports here and on reviews and articles elsewhere that say AMD with open source drivers is terrible: programs don't work, since they need OpenGL/CL versions that the default drivers can't provide; games are laggy and stuttery; videos cut out, and take the audio with them; etc. However, I've also seen a few people say they can game just fine, videos are perfect, and there's no trouble.


This contradiction may be due to the two different open source drivers available: radeon and AMDGPU. AMDGPU provides better performance I believe, but it's only available for newer cards. Older cards (which to AMD could mean 6 months if you're unlucky) are stuck with radeon, and a search of Google and Ask Ubuntu will show you there's no way to switch which one you're using. At least, there's no way that's been released.


Maybe 14.04 is too old for you, though. Maybe it doesn't have compatibility for that new application you use so much. Maybe you don't want to go through the trouble of backing up data and reinstalling. Well, there is another option. 2. Try out Oibaf's drivers.


If you don't care about performance, or you already have what you need, then don't bother with all the proprietary stuff, downgrading or weird installations. 4. Just stick with the open source drivers.


Depending on your exact graphics hardware, Ubuntu 16.04 and later will use either the open-source AMDGPU driver or the open-source Radeon driver, both of which are included in the default Ubuntu 16.04+ installation. Wait at least one minute for the command to scan your computer and generate the list of drivers. The output of this command will be a list of the package names and short descriptions of the available drivers. In addition to showing a list of the available open source drivers, the above command will often also identify recommended proprietary driver(s) for your system if there are any available.


ubuntu-drivers devices will not show graphics drivers that are not available from the official Ubuntu repositories, such as the AMDGPU-Pro graphics driver for Linux which is available from the official AMD website. If you have installed a proprietary graphics driver from somewhere else than the default Ubuntu repositories, ubuntu-drivers devices will confusingly sometimes show it as the recommended driver even if it is not working properly.

We recommend an Intel Core i5 or Core i7 CPU running at at least 3GHz (as of 11/2016), an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card (as of 11/2016), and the current release of the 64-bit version of Linux Mint with Mate desktop (18.3 "Sylvia" as of 04/2018). The AR Sandbox requires that the vendor-supplied binary drivers for the graphics card be installed. The radeon driver supports the activation of a heads-up display (HUD) which can draw transparent graphs and text on top of applications that are rendering, such as games. The radeon driver will probably enable vsync by default, which is perfectly fine except for benchmarking. To turn it off, try the vblank_mode=0 environment variable or create /.drirc (edit it if it already exists) and add the following:


If the cursor becomes corrupted (e.g. repeating itself vertically after the monitor(s) comes out of sleep) set "SWCursor" "True" in the "OutputClass" section of the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-radeon.conf configuration file.


If you use 390X (or perhaps similar models) and the 4k output from DP, you may experiencing occasional horizontal artifacts / flickering (i.e. every half an hour or so, a horizontal strip of pixels with a height of 100 pixels across the whole screen's width shaking up and down for a few seconds). This might be a bug of the radeon driver. Changing to AMDGPU seems to fix it.
